The Printed Music and Recorded Sound department holds the largest collection in the country of Russian printed music from the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries. This very valuable part of the Russian music collection includes the first experiments in Russia’s music printing history. The first Russian music publication was issued at the publishing house of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1730. It was produced to commemorate the coronation of Empress Anna Ioannovna. This was a single sheet enclosed with Paul Tallemant’s book Un Voyage de l’оle d’amour /A Voyage to the Island of Love/. The National Library of Russia contains over 340,000 items, including sheet music, scores, sound recordings, and original manuscripts by Haydn, Mozart, Mussorgsky and many others. One of the library’s many treasures is the score of Andre Gretry’s 1790 opera “Peter the Great,” which has undergone a revival recently in Russia. There is also a vast collection of Jewish and Soviet sheet music. One of the most interesting collections consists of postcards from the late 19th century, with scenes of St. Petersburg and snippets of music and lyrics.
